You and Your Money? Where Do You Stand?

In Australia right now, women represent 52% of the workforce, but we only hold 38% of the superannuation accounts for retirement. This means certain poverty for most women.

Indeed, the sad truth is that 75% of women retire in poverty because we don’t really know what to do with our money, often wonder where it goes (ever noticed how quickly that $50 note vanished?) and fear making the wrong decisions, so we end up doing nothing. Women don’t know how to be financially independent.

Women’s life expectancy is now 86.6 years of age, so we have over 21 years to fund after retirement, but 92% of women are not planning long-term to cover this gap. The need for financial independence for women is even more compelling when statistics confirm that 80% of women will spend at least 6 -10 years alone in retirement irrespective of marital status and that 30% of that time is spent in a debilitated state of multiple chronic illnesses.

We don’t like to talk about the financial impact of the loss of a spouse nor the healthcare costs associated with aging. For those of use without partners, the burden is even greater, so the need to be financially independent becomes a “must”.

It is essential to learn how to become wealthy. It doesn’t just turn up. Financial independence for women won’t happen by “hoping”, so you must actively pursue it. Thankfully, it’s relatively simple.

Financial independence for women is not about how much you earn. It’s not about your assets, bank account or level of education. It’s about how much you keep. To be financially independent means making the decision to learn how to become wealthy and committing to living life on your terms.
